masculinity even means anymore. One moment, we’re told to man up. Next, we’re warned not to be too masculine. Strength is seen as threatening. Leadership is called oppressive. Responsibility is replaced by comfort and distraction. And somewhere along the way, a lot of us started wondering if it’s safer to stay quiet, play small, and blend in.

Our culture celebrates the perpetual teenager. Always chasing the next thrill and avoiding commitment. Mistaking rebellion for freedom. But that’s not who God made us to be.

From the very beginning, He designed us with purpose. He placed courage in our hearts, adventure in our souls, and the capacity for deep, sacrificial love in our spirits. We weren’t made to drift through life as spectators. We were made to build, protect, love, and lead, not in domination, but in devotion.

The world calls us to stay small, but God calls us to rise.

Moments That Shaped Me

I can still smell the smoke from those old campfires.

forest fire. The tongue, though small, wields tremendous influence.

The Trigger

We’ve all said something in frustration or sarcasm, only to watch it cut deep. Words, once spoken, cannot be taken back.

The God-Moment

James warns that our tongues can be “set on fire by hell” if left unchecked. But the reverse is also true. When surrendered to God, our words can be a steady stream of blessing.

The Response and the Shift

This isn’t about willpower alone. Taming the tongue is a work of the Spirit. It’s about letting God transform our hearts, because our words are simply the overflow of what’s inside.

For Us Today

Ask yourself, are my words steering relationships toward trust and grace, or division and hurt? Every conversation is a chance to plant seeds of life or destruction.

Digging Deeper

action.

The Scene in the Early Church

It’s a quiet gathering in a first-century home. Oil lamps flicker against stone walls. Believers are sharing psalms and breaking bread. Then the door opens. A man steps in wearing fine robes, gold rings catching the lamplight. He smells faintly of imported oils. The kind only the wealthy can afford. The leader of the gathering greets him warmly, guiding him to the best seat.

Moments later, another man enters. His clothes are worn thin. His hands are calloused from long days of manual labor. Without much thought, someone gestures for him to stand in the back.

James had seen this kind of thing happen, and he couldn’t stay silent.

The Trigger

Favoritism was creeping into the church, and it was a direct contradiction of the gospel. Jesus never made seating charts based on social status. He went out of His way to elevate the overlooked.

The God-Moment

James confronts the believers with the truth: if you claim to have faith but do not act in love, your faith is dead. Faith is not a private belief tucked away in your heart. It’s a living force that moves toward others, especially those who cannot repay you.

The Response and the Challenge

It’s one thing to nod in agreement; it’s another to change behavior. James calls them (and us) to examine where our faith has stalled into empty words.

For Us Today

We might not assign literal “seats of honor,” but we can still favor those who are easy to love. The invitation is simple but challenging: let your faith be visible in how you treat people, especially the ones the world overlooks.

Digging Deeper

faith.

When Life Gets Loud

James wastes no time with small talk. He starts with the thing most of us try to avoid: trials.
He says to count it all joy when we face them, not because pain is pleasant, but because God uses hardship to produce something we can’t get any other way, steadfastness.

Think about that.
The storms you wish would pass are the very storms that build a faith that lasts.
The heat you pray God would take away is what hardens your faith into something that can’t crack under pressure.

The God-Moment

James doesn’t just talk about trials. He shows us where to go when we’re in them. Straight to God for wisdom. Not the kind that helps you look smart in front of people, but the kind that keeps your heart steady when life is falling apart.

And here’s the good news: God gives generously, without scolding us for asking.

The Response

James warns us not to be double-minded — half-trusting God and half-trusting ourselves. That’s like trying to stand on two boats drifting in opposite directions. Eventually, you’re going to end up in the water.

Instead, we plant both feet firmly in God’s character. We trust His goodness even when the circumstances scream otherwise.

The Consequence

Faith that endures through trials grows mature. It stops flinching at every setback. It no longer needs constant proof of God’s care. It stands tall, anchored in the reality that God is faithful no matter what.

For Us

James 1 is not a pep talk. It’s a reality check. Trials are not detours; they are the road God uses to shape us.

When we ask Him for wisdom, we’re not just asking for solutions — we’re asking for eyes to see our trouble through His perspective. That’s where joy comes from.

The next time the wind picks up and the waves rise, don’t pray only for the storm to end. Pray to stand steady in the middle of it. That’s how God builds an unshakable faith.

Digging Deeper

My voice shook. I stumbled through it. And I probably said a few things I’d love to edit out of existence.

But here’s what stuck with me: prayer is scary when we don’t understand it.

Over the years, I’ve seen so many people begin a relationship with God, full of excitement and good intentions, only to get stuck. Not because they didn’t believe, but because they didn’t know how to talk to Him. Some drift. Others treat the church like a social club. And when they’re home? No seeking. No depth. Just doing what everyone else is doing.

That’s why I wrote this guide.

Not as a lecture. But as an invitation.
To make prayer feel possible again.
To help you talk to God, whether standing on a mountaintop or crawling through the valley.

Prayer is the difference between a religious routine and a real relationship.

And whether you’re looking for comfort, clarity, courage, or just a reminder that He hears you, I believe you’ll find something here that helps.

Because for many of us, prayer feels like it should come naturally.
After all, we’re just talking to God.

But more often than not, prayer feels like tuning a radio with too much static.
We know the signal’s there. We don’t always know how to lock in.

This post is an honest, in-depth guide to prayer—how to build, grow, and stick with it. It’s for real people walking through real seasons of doubt, distraction, and a deep desire for more.

If that’s you, welcome. You’re in the right place.

Let’s dive in.

Table of Contents

PART 1: Why Prayer Feels So Hard (And Why It Matters Anyway)

Why Prayer Doesn’t Come Naturally (Even If You Love Jesus)

Is God Even Listening?

What’s the Point of Prayer If God Already Knows Everything?

PART 2: How to Actually Pray (Without Sounding Weird)

How to Start Talking to God (Even If It Feels Awkward)

What Do I Say? Why Prayer Doesn’t Come Naturally (Even If You Love Jesus)

Let me tell you something upfront: If prayer feels hard, awkward, or unnatural for you, you’re not broken. You’re human.

We’re born into noise, trained to be self-reliant, and live in a culture where silence feels uncomfortable and slowing down feels like weakness. So the moment we step into prayer, everything in us wants to fidget, fix something, or scroll.

But prayer invites us into something opposite of all that. Stillness. Dependence. Intimacy. It’s no wonder our flesh fights it.

Even Jesus' disciples had to ask, “Lord, teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1). These were guys who had grown up in religious tradition, but they saw something different in how Jesus prayed and knew they were missing something. We can relate.

Prayer doesn’t come naturally because it’s supernatural. It’s communication with an unseen God. And yet, it’s the most natural thing our spirit longs for.

So don’t beat yourself up for the struggle. Acknowledge it. Let it remind you that you’re not praying to perform but to connect.

Reflection Questions:

What parts of prayer feel unnatural or intimidating to you?

When did you last pray without worrying about the “right words”?

I'm Pastor Chris McKinney, and I've had the privilege of serving as a pastor in Graham, Washington. The Pacific Northwest has been my home for as long as I can remember, and I've been fortunate to be part of various church communities as a believer and a Pastor.

My unwavering passion lies in the profound study of God's word, as I firmly believe it holds the power to breathe life into our existence and illuminate our path. My heart desires to guide individuals in navigating life's challenges through the unwavering anchor of faith.

Why a Devotional on Prayer?

Prayer, though one of the most fundamental of spiritual disciplines, often remains in the background, quietly supporting our spiritual journey. As a Pastor, I understand the profound need for dedicated moments of prayer, and I keenly sense its absence when I neglect it. Prayer has weaved an intricate tapestry within my life, weaving its influence in ways beyond quantification. What I do know with unwavering certainty is this: God yearns for our prayers, and the Holy Spirit, as God's divine messenger, bestows upon us everything we need when we approach prayer with open eyes, ears, and hearts.

This truth has been a north star in my journey, and I hope it will blaze a path in yours.

As you invest your time in traversing this devotional, reading the Scriptures, and thoughtfully engaging with the reflection questions provided, my prayer is that it will lead you toward a profound revelation regarding prayer. By the conclusion of this devotional, you'll find an ignited, newfound desire to immerse yourself in the transformative act of prayer.

Remember, prayer is an intensely personal journey with God, and I wholeheartedly encourage you to reach out here on Substack.
