10 Ways to Praise God When You Don’t Know What to Say
Whether you’re bursting with joy or barely hanging on, these prayers of praise are here to help.
Hey friends! I’m Chris, writer of Faith Unplugged. I share weekly encouragement to help you grow closer to God. If this blesses you, consider subscribing or giving a one-time gift. Your support helps me continue creating and sharing God’s truth with others.
It’s easy to praise God when life is smooth. When the coffee’s hot, the bills are paid, and everything feels like it’s falling into place. But what about those days when life punches you in the gut?
When God feels distant or your heart feels worn thin, praise becomes more than a song. It becomes a decision. A choice to lift your eyes, even when everything in you wants to look down.
Let’s be honest. Praise doesn’t mean pretending. This isn’t about putting on a fake smile and acting like the pain’s not real. Life can be hard. Sometimes heartbreak shows up uninvited and overstays its welcome. But we praise anyway. Not to ignore the hurt, but to anchor our hearts in truth.
Because praise shifts our focus.
It reminds us that God’s character isn’t based on our circumstances. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Praise helps us remember who He is when everything else tries to convince us otherwise.
Paul and Silas Praised Before the Breakthrough
Paul and Silas had just been beaten and thrown into the inner prison. Their feet were fastened in stocks, their backs were bleeding, and there was no guarantee they’d make it out alive. But around midnight, instead of groaning or giving up, they started praying and singing praises to God. In the middle of their pain, they worshiped.
And God responded. An earthquake shook the prison, doors flew open, and every chain fell off. But the real miracle happened before the shaking. Paul and Silas were praised when they had every reason not to be. Their worship wasn’t based on circumstances. It was rooted in trust. They praised because they knew who God was, even in the dark. (Acts 16:25-26, ESV)
What the Bible Says About Praise
Before we begin the prayers, let’s pause to allow scripture to shape our perspective. Praise isn’t just something we do when we feel like it. It’s part of our purpose, our posture, and our pathway into God’s presence.
Praise reminds us of who God is.
"Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable."
Psalm 145:3 (ESV)
Praise is how we draw close to God.
"Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name!"
Psalm 100:4 (ESV)
Praise brings peace when we feel anxious.
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
Philippians 4:6–7 (ESV)
Praise is part of why we were created.
"But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession,
that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light."
1 Peter 2:9 (ESV)
Praise is for all creation.
"Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!"
Psalm 150:6 (ESV)

Keep Praising, Even When It Feels Small
Here’s the truth. Praise doesn’t always look like shouting from the rooftops. Sometimes it’s a whisper through tears. Sometimes it’s a song in the car or a quiet “thank you” in the middle of your mess.
But every time you praise, whether big or small, it shifts something in your soul.
So keep showing up. Keep praising. God is always good. And He’s always worthy.
