The Wrong View of Self-Care
Society bombards us with expectations prioritizing productivity, selflessness, and the needs of others, often leaving us feeling guilty for tending to our well-being. Whether it’s the pressure to achieve perfection or the fear of being judged as lazy or selfish, these misconceptions can hinder us from embracing self-care. It’s time to challenge these beliefs and recognize that caring for ourselves is not a failure but an essential component of a fulfilling life.
What is Self-Care?
Self-care encompasses loving God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength and loving our neighbors as ourselves—a commandment reiterated by Jesus himself (Mark 12:30-31). It extends beyond physical practices and includes nurturing our emotional and mental health. By prioritizing self-care, we create space to experience God’s love and presence, which empowers us to live vibrant lives that bring glory to Him (Proverbs 4:23).
The Truth About Self-Care
We Are Whole Persons
We are whole persons—spirit, soul, and body—designed by God to love and serve Him (1 Thessalonians 5:23). Neglecting any aspect of our being hinders our ability to fulfill our purpose. Just as we exercise self-control and discipline our bodies, we must also tend to our spiritual and mental well-being. While bodily training has value, godliness holds promise for both this life and the life to come (1 Timothy 4:8). It’s a holistic approach that recognizes the importance of caring for both our physical and spiritual needs.
We Have Limits
Acknowledging our limitations is a profound act of humility and dependence on God. Like the example of Elijah, who faced extraordinary challenges, we, too, need rest and care to navigate life’s demands (Psalm 103:15-16, 1 Kings 19:1-8). Our limits remind us that we are finite beings created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27), and it is within these boundaries that we find our strength and purpose. Instead of fearing our limits, let us embrace them as opportunities to rely on God’s grace and experience His provision.
We Must Navigate Each New Season
Life unfolds in seasons, each with unique challenges and demands. Whether juggling multiple roles, caring for loved ones, or carrying heavy workloads, we may feel overwhelmed and unable to prioritize self-care. However, by trusting in God’s care and provision, we can find hope and sustain ourselves through each season (Psalm 1:3). It requires creating habits that nourish our well-being, continually plugging into God’s care, and seeking the support of a nurturing community.
We Must Not Idolize Self-Care
While self-care is essential, we must guard against making it an idol. Scripture warns us against exchanging the truth about God for a lie and worshiping and serving ourselves instead of the Creator (1 Corinthians 10:6-8, Romans 1:21-25). Self-care is a privilege, not a right, and should be pursued with a heart of surrender and gratitude for God’s provision. As followers of Christ, we are called to lay down our rights for the good of others and the glory of God.
We Must Care For Others
God designed us for the community, and caring for ourselves involves relying on and caring for others. It means letting people help us and delegating responsibilities when needed. By seeking the kingdom of God, we embrace a self-care journey that prioritizes not only our well-being but also the well-being of others (Romans 12:1-2, Philippians 2:5-8, Matthew 6:25-33).
Jesus Is Our Example
Jesus provides the ultimate example of self-care. He took time to rest, pray, and recharge, even amidst the demands of ministry. His life reflects a balance between self-care and serving others (Mark 6:30-34). By following His example, we learn to trust His empowering presence and rest in His care, finding strength and purpose every season.
Self-care is not a luxury reserved for a few but a sacred journey we should embark upon. It is a daily commitment to prioritize our well-being within God’s love and purpose. As we nurture ourselves physically, emotionally, and spiritually, we become better equipped to love and serve God and others. So, let’s embrace this transformative journey and discover the abundant life when we care for ourselves as beloved children of God.
Let’s surrender our worries, anxieties, and weariness at the feet of Jesus and commit to prioritizing our well-being and trusting in His care. May God’s love and grace fill you with joy, peace, and renewed strength as you embrace the sacred self-care journey.
