Finding Hope in Disappointment
Being a responsible adult is hard, especially when people count on you. The burden can be a lot to handle. Especially when times are tough, finances are tight, and it seems no relief is coming. To top it all off, 1 in 5 adults in the US experiences some form of mental illness. (https://www.nami.org/mhstats)
In Christian circles, we put much pressure on ourselves to look a certain way. We want to roll up to church with nice wheels, have sparkling clothes, and say and do the right things so people will think we’re #blessed.
Let me be the first to say it. The struggle is real, and I often wonder what God is doing in the background. I wonder why I’m facing another struggle and not living my best life like those on social media. When the budget is tight, and you have to pick what essential items will be on the list, it can discourage you and heighten your sensitivity to those around you.
Disappointment can cast a shadow over our lives, especially during the holidays. As believers, we find solace and strength in the promises of the Bible, knowing that God is always with us, even in our moments of letdown.
The Bible reminds us that God is close to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18). In times of disappointment, we can take comfort in the assurance that He understands our pain. As believers, we're not alone in our struggles. That person posting pictures of the “perfect day” is struggling too, but they don’t post those pictures.
Romans 8:28 reassures us that God works all things for the good of those who love Him. Even in disappointment, He orchestrates a plan that goes beyond our understanding. Our trust in His sovereignty allows us to navigate through life's disappointments with hope.
5 Tips for Beating Disappointment
1. Seek God's Presence Daily
You’ll notice the difference this makes when you make time and don’t. It’s like filling up the gas tank of your heart to give you the energy for the day. There are many ways to seek God’s presence.
Morning Devotionals - I love spending time with God in the morning, but when I can’t, any regular time is good as long as it’s a priority. The Bible app has great plans if you need help getting started.
Prayer Walks - Spending time on a walk looking at nature and talking with God can be good for your soul. If you don’t have great scenery, look for God wherever you are.
Journaling - Reflect on verses that resonate with you. Another way to journal is to write a letter to God in the first half and then write what you think his response is in the second half. If you’re having trouble writing, take some time and wait for God to speak to you through your thoughts. Don’t be discouraged if it takes a while.
Worship Playlists - Listen to worship songs regularly. Find songs you love that talk about who God is and what he’s done. Play those on the regular. It will improve your mood and contribute to a brighter perspective.
Quiet Reflection - Go where there’s quiet, turn off the devices, listen to God and reflect on His word.
Make spending time with God a daily habit. Whether through prayer, reading the Bible, or worship, staying connected with Him strengthens our faith and provides a solid foundation to face disappointments.
2. Embrace Gratitude
In 1 Thessalonians 5:18, we're reminded to give thanks in all circumstances. Focusing on gratitude shifts our perspective and helps us find joy even in the midst of disappointment.
Here are ways to embrace gratitude:
Gratitude Journal: Daily, list three things you're thankful for to cultivate a thankful heart. Then you can review the journal to remind yourself of all that God has done.
Express Thanks Aloud: Verbalize your gratitude to God during prayer or throughout the day.
Gratitude Jar: Write down moments of gratitude on slips of paper and place them in a jar to revisit later.
Share Thankfulness: Share your gratitude with friends and family, spreading a positive atmosphere.
3. Share Your Heart with Fellow Believers
Galatians 6:2 encourages us to carry each other's burdens. Don't hesitate to share your disappointments with fellow believers; they can provide support, prayer, and a listening ear.
Here are ways to share your heart with fellow believers:

4. Reflect on God's Faithfulness
Review past seasons of disappointment and recall how God has brought you through. Remembering His faithfulness builds confidence in His ability to carry you through current challenges.
Here are ways to reflect on God’s faithfulness:
Memorial Stones: Create a visual reminder of God's faithfulness, like a "memorial stone" collection or scrapbook.
Yearly Reflections: Set aside time at the end of each year to reflect on how God has been faithful.
Testimony Sharing: Share personal testimonies of God's faithfulness with others to inspire and encourage.
Gratitude Prayers: Thank God specifically for instances where His faithfulness was evident.
Look for Patterns: Identify recurring themes in God's faithfulness throughout your life, recognizing His consistent presence.
