I’ve led worship for a long time, which means I’ve spent a lot of hours singing about the goodness, faithfulness, mercy, holiness, and greatness of God. Put a lyric on a screen, give me a piano or guitar, and I’m fine. Take away the music, the lyric sheet, the chord progression, and the worship leader who already figured out what everyone is supposed to say, and things can get a little more interesting.
Sometimes you sit down with God and realize your entire vocabulary for praise has become, “God, You’re good.” Then, because you’re trying to keep things moving, you add, “You’re really good.” After that, there’s usually a pause that lasts just long enough for you to wonder if you’re doing this wrong.
I don’t think you are.
I think a lot of people genuinely want to praise God but don’t really know what praise sounds like outside of a song. We know how to sing someone else’s words. We know how to repeat phrases we’ve heard in church. We know the standard Christian vocabulary. What gets harder is putting our own words around who God is.
That’s what I want to help with.
Praise doesn’t have to be poetic. It doesn’t have to sound impressive. It doesn’t require a certain mood, a quiet room, or a worship playlist playing softly in the background. It just needs to be true.
David’s Praise Came From a Pretty Strange Place
Psalm 34 opens with a line a lot of us know:
“I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.”
Psalm 34:1, ESV
That sounds strong and confident. It also sounds a lot cleaner than the story behind it.
David had been running from Saul, who wanted him dead. He escaped to Gath, which seemed like a good idea right up until the people there recognized him. This was David, the guy who killed Goliath. Their Goliath.
Suddenly the place he ran to for safety didn’t feel very safe anymore, so David did something that doesn’t usually make it into the inspirational quote graphics. He pretended to be insane. He scratched on doors, let spit run down his beard, and acted unstable enough that the king basically decided he didn’t want anything to do with him.
Then David leaves that moment and says, “His praise shall continually be in my mouth.”
That changes the verse for me.
David wasn’t saying, “Everything is good.” He was saying, “God is still good.” There’s a big difference. His circumstances were confusing. His future was uncertain. He had been afraid and humiliated, and he still found something true to say about God.
That’s praise.
Praise Isn’t About Sounding Spiritual
I think we make praise harder than it needs to be. Somewhere along the way, many of us picked up the idea that praising God is supposed to sound polished. We need the right words, the right tone, maybe a little emotion in our voice. If we don’t feel deeply spiritual in the moment, we assume we’re probably doing it wrong.
We’re not.
Praise is simply telling the truth about God. God, You’re faithful. You’re patient. You’re merciful. You’re wise. You’re kind.
Those are simple statements, but simple doesn’t mean shallow. The real difference comes when you stop treating those words like a list and start connecting them to your life.
“God, You’re faithful. I can look back and see moments where I had no clue what was going to happen next, and somehow You carried me through anyway.”
“God, You’re patient. I’ve made some of the same mistakes more than once, and You haven’t given up on me.”
“God, You’re merciful. You know everything about me, including the parts I’d rather keep hidden, and You still invite me close.”
Now praise isn’t just vocabulary. It’s memory. It’s recognition. It’s you looking at your own story and noticing God in it.
You Can Praise God Without Pretending Everything Is Fine
This is where I think some of us get tripped up. We hear the word praise and assume it means ignoring whatever hurts.
Something is falling apart, so we tell ourselves to be positive. We’re disappointed, so we say, “God is good.” We’re angry or confused, but we feel guilty admitting it because we think praise is supposed to sound cheerful.
The Psalms don’t work that way.
David talks about fear, loneliness, betrayal, anger, grief, exhaustion, and confusion. He doesn’t hide any of it. Then, right in the middle of those emotions, he keeps returning to what is true about God.
That’s a healthier picture of praise.
You can say, “God, I don’t understand what You’re doing right now, but I still believe You’re faithful.” You can say, “I’m scared, but I know You’re bigger than what I’m afraid of.” You can say, “I wish You had answered differently, but I still believe You’re wise.”
That isn’t pretending. That’s choosing not to let your pain become the only truth you can see.
I think that’s one of the reasons praise matters so much. Praise doesn’t erase the hard thing. It reminds you that the hard thing isn’t God.
Start With One Simple Sentence
If you want a practical place to begin, try this:
God, You are...
Then finish the sentence.
Don’t try to sound profound. Pick one thing you know is true. God, You’re faithful. You’re present. You’re gracious. You’re holy. You’re patient.
Then ask yourself one more question:
Where have I seen that?
That’s where the words usually start to come.
If you say, “God, You’re faithful,” think about the last time you needed Him to be faithful. Maybe it was a financial season. Maybe it was grief. Maybe it was a job you didn’t know how to navigate. Maybe it was a relationship that changed. Maybe nothing happened the way you hoped, but you’re still here, and somehow God kept giving you enough strength for the next day.
Tell Him that.
You don’t need a speech. You need something true.
Praise God for Who He Is, Not Just for What He Gives
Most of us are already pretty good at thanking God. Thank You for my family. Thank You for my job. Thank You for this meal. Thank You for answering that prayer.
Those are good prayers. Keep praying them.
But praise goes a little deeper.
Instead of only thanking God for the gift, pay attention to what the gift tells you about Him. “Thank You for providing” becomes “God, You’re my provider.” “Thank You for forgiving me” becomes “God, You’re merciful.” “Thank You for helping me through that” becomes “God, You’re faithful.”
One focuses on the gift. The other follows the gift back to the Giver.
That difference matters because circumstances change. Jobs change. Relationships change. Health changes. Answers change. Sometimes the thing you were thanking God for last year isn’t part of your life anymore.
But God’s character hasn’t changed.
If your praise is built only on what God gives you, a hard enough season can make it disappear. If your praise is rooted in who God is, the season may change the sound of your praise, but it doesn’t have to silence it.
Borrow Words When Yours Run Out
There are days when your own words aren’t coming. That’s normal. Use someone else’s.
The Psalms are incredibly helpful here because they give language to almost every emotional place a person can end up. If you’re afraid, there are Psalms for that. If you’re grieving, there are Psalms for that. If you’re thankful, there are Psalms for that. If you’re angry, confused, exhausted, or waiting, there are Psalms for that too.
You don’t have to turn this into a Bible study. Open a Psalm and read slowly. When something catches your attention, stop.
If you read, “The LORD is my shepherd,” you might simply say, “God, You’re my Shepherd. There have been plenty of times I didn’t know where I was going, but You did.”
If you read, “God is our refuge and strength,” you might say, “God, You’re a safe place for me when everything feels unstable.”
You’re not trying to impress God with your wording. You’re letting Scripture remind you who He is.
Your Own Story Can Give You Words
One of the easiest ways to find something to praise God for is to look backward.
Think about what God has already brought you through. What did you once pray about constantly that you hardly think about now? What situation felt impossible at the time? Where did someone show up right when you needed them? What did God provide? What did He protect you from? What gave you strength when you were sure you had none left?
We’re funny creatures. We can pray desperately for something for months, receive it, and six months later treat it like background furniture.
The thing that once felt like a miracle becomes normal.
That’s why remembering matters.
Sometimes praise is simply noticing what you’ve stopped noticing.
“God, I remember when I thought I was alone, and You sent exactly the right person.”
“God, I remember when I had no clue how we were going to get through that, and somehow You made a way.”
“God, I remember how afraid I was, and You gave me enough strength to keep going.”
You may find that you know a lot more about praising God than you thought. You just needed to remember.
What If You Really Don’t Feel Like Praising God?
Then say that.
“God, I don’t feel like praising You today.”
He already knows. You’re not going to catch Him off guard.
Maybe you’re angry. Maybe you’ve been waiting for an answer for a long time. Maybe you’re disappointed. Maybe you’re tired of being told to have faith when what you really want is for something to change.
Tell Him.
Then ask yourself what is still true.
Maybe it’s only one thing: “God, I don’t understand You right now, but I know You’ve been faithful before.”
That may be all you have today, and that’s enough.
I don’t think praise always has to sound victorious. Sometimes praise sounds tired. Sometimes it sounds confused. Sometimes it comes through tears. Sometimes it sounds like someone saying, “I still believe You’re good, even though I don’t understand this.”
There’s something deeply honest about that kind of praise.
Praise Puts Things Back in Perspective
Praise doesn’t always change your circumstances.
David still had enemies after Psalm 34. He still had uncertainty. He still had problems he couldn’t solve.
What changed was what he was looking at.
Fear has a way of taking up all the space in the room. So does disappointment. So does grief. If you stare at a problem long enough, it starts to feel like the biggest thing in existence.
Praise doesn’t make the problem disappear. It reminds you that the problem isn’t God.
That matters.
You can still be afraid and remember God is faithful. You can still be grieving and remember God is near. You can still be confused and remember God is wise. You can still be waiting and remember God hasn’t abandoned you.
Praise gives your pain a place without giving it the throne.
A Simple Place to Start Today
If you want to practice this, keep it very simple.
Find a quiet moment and ask yourself three questions:
Who is God?
Where have I seen that in my life?
What can I say to Him about it?
That’s it.
You might end up saying, “God, You’re faithful. I remember a time when I had no idea what was going to happen, and You carried me through. I don’t know what’s going to happen this time either, but I know You haven’t changed.”
That’s praise.
No special vocabulary required. No perfect mood. No band. No bridge repeated six times until everyone finally feels something.
Just truth.
You Already Have Something to Say
When I read Psalm 34 now, I don’t picture David as calm and polished. I picture a man who has just come through a bizarre, frightening, embarrassing situation and is still trying to make sense of it.
And in the middle of that, he looks at God and says, “I will bless the LORD at all times.”
That’s probably closer to real praise than a lot of us realize.
Praise isn’t pretending you have no problems. It’s remembering that your problems aren’t bigger than God.
So if you want to praise Him and you don’t know what to say, start small. Tell Him one thing you know is true, then tell Him where you’ve seen it.
You may be surprised how quickly the words come after that.
And if all you have today is one honest sentence, that’s still a good place to begin.
A Few Questions About Praising God
How do I praise God with words?
Start by naming one thing that is true about God, then connect it to your own experience. For example, “God, You’re faithful. I can see places in my life where You carried me when I didn’t know what to do.”
What are some words I can use to praise God?
You can describe God as faithful, holy, merciful, patient, loving, wise, just, powerful, gracious, compassionate, present, forgiving, and trustworthy. The goal isn’t to build a long list. Pick one and explain why it matters to you.
What if praising God feels awkward?
That’s normal. Most things feel awkward when we’re learning how to put our own words around them. Start small and be honest. You don’t need to sound like someone leading a prayer meeting.
Can I praise God when I’m upset with Him?
Yes. Scripture gives us plenty of examples of people being honest about pain, frustration, and confusion while still turning toward God. Praise doesn’t require emotional denial.
Is praising God the same as thanking Him?
They overlap, but they’re not exactly the same. Thanksgiving focuses on what God has done or given. Praise focuses more directly on who God is.
