“Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.”
Isaiah 43:18-19 (ESV)
The Difference Between Fulfilled and Unfulfilled Lives
Isaiah 43:18-19 sets the stage for our exploration into the art of decision-making. What separates those who are fulfilled from those who aren't? Fulfilled individuals boast great relationships, financial contentment, meaningful purpose, and a genuine love for life. Conversely, unfulfilled people struggle in relationships, face financial hardships, and grapple with emptiness.
The crux? It's not about intelligence, talent, or appearance. The key lies in the decisions we make.
The quality of your decisions determines the quality of your life.
It's a simple truth that carries profound implications. But why do we, as believers, often struggle to make wise choices?
Why We Struggle To Make Good Decisions
1. Overwhelmed with Choices
Navigating the maze of choices in our modern world can feel like trying to find your way out of a cornfield at night. Imagine standing in the supermarket aisle, surrounded by a bewildering array of cereal boxes. It's not just about choosing between Frosted Flakes and Cheerios; it's about deciding between gluten-free, whole grain, or the mysteriously tempting chocolate marshmallow cereal that beckons from the shelf.
As you stare at the seemingly infinite options, decision fatigue sets in. Do you go for the heart-healthy option, or do you succumb to the siren call of the sugary delights? The struggle is real, and in this cereal aisle of life, the choices are as overwhelming as trying to decipher an ancient treasure map.
We all experience decision fatigue in some way. It's like trying to choose a pizza topping without divine intervention. On average, we make 35,000 decisions each day. Decision fatigue kicks in, leading to impulsive actions, like ordering pizza for the fifth time this week. Because, let's be honest, deciding between pepperoni and pineapple is a universal struggle.
2. Fear of Making Wrong Choices
Imagine standing at the intersection of romantic destiny, uncertain which path leads to the divinely ordained life partner. The fear of making a wrong choice in matters of the heart turns the pursuit of love into a chess game.
As you navigate the world of dating and courtship, the stakes feel higher than Daniel in the lion's den. Is this person the one God has chosen for me, or am I misinterpreting the divine signals? The fear of veering off the path can lead to a hesitancy that transforms the pursuit of love into a waiting room while you anxiously anticipate a divine green light.
I made this mistake when deciding to marry my wife. My fear was that my marriage would end up a statistic like countless others I knew. I didn’t know the power of godly decision-making and how it can impact my life. So I waited much longer than I should have to get married. Once I made the decision that this marriage would be focused on God and His plans for us, it was the boost I needed to move forward. Putting God in the center and aligning with God’s word ensures that our marriage will stand the test of time.
3. Emotions Overruling Logic
Our emotions often cloud our judgment. We overanalyze trivial matters and make impulsive decisions in crucial moments. Making permanent choices based on temporary emotions is a path that leads to regret.
Picture the scenario of contemplating a job change in the heat of dissatisfaction. The emotional discontent with the current work environment can trigger a desire for immediate change. The logical evaluation of long-term career goals and potential consequences takes a back seat to the emotional yearning for greener professional pastures.
It's like standing on the edge of a career cliff, emotions acting as a gust of wind that launches us into the unknown. Jumping from job to job based on temporary workplace frustrations can result in a career journey resembling a chaotic rollercoaster ride, leaving us wondering if the initial emotional jump was worth the twists and turns.
The Proactive Pause
Proverbs 16:3 guides us: "With God’s help, we will determine our course of action before the moment of decision."
In the rush of life, decisions often demand swift responses. The power of pre-deciding introduces the proactive pause—a moment of intentional reflection before reacting. This strategic pause allows you to align your choices with God's guidance, ensuring that actions are deliberate rather than impulsive. Imagine facing a challenging situation, and instead of succumbing to the pressure of the moment, you can pre-decide to take a breath, seek divine wisdom, and respond with grace.
The proactive pause becomes a sanctuary in the midst of life's storms, providing a haven for thoughtful decision-making even in the heat of the moment.
Biblical Examples of Pre-Deciding
The Bible has profound stories of pre-decision. One of the most iconic stories begins with Abraham (Genesis 22:1-18), the father of faith. In a divine test of loyalty, God instructed Abraham to sacrifice his beloved son, Isaac. The pre-decision in Abraham's heart, rooted in unwavering trust, propelled him to follow through with faith. His commitment to God's plan, even when it defied human understanding, is a timeless testament to pre-deciding in the face of daunting challenges.
Ruth's pre-decision unfolded in the midst of adversity when faced with the choice to remain with her mother-in-law, Naomi, or return to her homeland (Ruth 1:16-17). Ruth's resolute commitment transcended circumstances, embodying a pre-decision that weathered the storms of uncertainty. Her unwavering loyalty became a beacon of enduring love, illustrating the power of pre-deciding in forging profound connections.
In the foreign land of Babylon, Daniel (Daniel 1:8-21) and his friends found themselves in a cultural clash. In a society attempting to reshape their identities, they pre-decided to hold fast to their values and heritage. Daniel's resolution not to defile himself with the king's food symbolized a pre-decision to remain true to God's commands. Their unwavering commitment to principles amidst cultural pressure showcases the transformative strength of pre-deciding in the face of external influences.
What Do You Value?
For many of us, our values are “common sense,” but that might not be the case for everyone. Along the way, there will be new things that the Holy Spirit will show you, and they will become values for you.
Obedience and faithfulness to God are a few of my most important values. God clarified and added meaning to that value on a trip a few years ago. The Holy Spirit revealed that I was holding back in my ministry because I felt I needed permission to do everything God had called me to do.
Looking back, it seems ridiculous now, but even though I hadn’t noticed it for years, this is an area where my values grew. I now believe that obeying God means moving forward, with His permission being the most important, and prayerfully, I’ll find people who champion the calling God has placed on my life.
Understanding your value system is important to moving forward. It’s not good enough to adopt your parents, pastor’s, or leaders ’ values. You must develop your values that extend beyond what would be foundational.
Clarify your values—integrity, faithfulness, purity, and generosity are good starting points. When your values are clear, decisions become easier.
Remember, decisions determine direction and direction determines destiny.
Is your life moving in a direction you like?
How to Clarify Your Values
Reflect on God-inspired Moments
Consider significant moments in your life where God's principles guided you, such as times when you chose honesty over deception or displayed kindness in alignment with God’s word.
Identify Core Values Aligned with Scripture
Discern fundamental values like integrity, faithfulness, purity, or generosity, ensuring they resonate with the teachings of God's Word. For instance, recognizing honesty as a core value reflects the biblical call to truthfulness.
Evaluate Alignment with God's Word
Assess whether your current decisions and life direction align with the values rooted in God's Word. If generosity is a core value, consider if your actions reflect the biblical principle of giving to others as an expression of God's love.
Regularly Seek Guidance from Scripture
Values may evolve, so regularly revisit and refine your list by seeking guidance from God's Word. Let the Bible be your compass, shaping your values in accordance with timeless truths and divine wisdom.
