Why Your Story Matters to God
Hi friends! I’m Pastor Chris McKinney and I write Faith Unplugged. If this message resonates with you, I invite you to subscribe with a free or paid subscription and if you'd like to support this ministry further, feel free to buy me a coffee. Your support is greatly appreciated!
A few years ago, a member of our congregation—let's call him John—approached me after a service. He hesitated, shuffling his feet, and finally said, "Pastor, I don't think my story matters. I've never faced any great trials or had a dramatic conversion. I just try to live a good life." I looked at him and smiled, "John, your story is exactly the kind that can touch hearts in ways you can't even imagine."
Many of us feel that our personal stories are insignificant in the grand tapestry of God's plan. We might think that unless we've overcome monumental obstacles or had miraculous experiences, our testimonies don't carry weight. But I'm here to tell you that every believer's story is precious to God. Your journey, with all its ups and downs, is an essential part of His redemptive work in this world.
In the next few moments, let's explore together why your story matters so much to God and how sharing it can profoundly impact others. We'll delve into how each of our narratives fits into God's greater plan, the power inherent in personal testimonies, and practical ways to overcome any fears about sharing your journey.
So let's open our hearts and see how God can use each of us—yes, even you—to touch lives and advance His Kingdom.
1. God’s Bigger Plan: Why Every Story Matters
Friends, it's easy to feel like a small, unnoticed piece in the vast puzzle of life. But remember, every piece is crucial to completing the picture. The Bible is filled with accounts of ordinary people whose stories became integral to God's extraordinary plan.
Consider Joseph, a young man sold into slavery by his own brothers. Despite the betrayal and hardships he faced, God used his circumstances to save an entire nation from famine. Joseph later told his brothers, "As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good" (Genesis 50:20, ESV). His story teaches us that our trials can serve a greater purpose in God's hands.
Then there's Rahab, a woman with a troubled past, who chose to help Israelite spies in Jericho. Her faith and courage not only spared her family but also placed her in the lineage of Jesus Christ. And let's not forget Esther, an orphaned Jewish girl who became a queen and risked her life to save her people. Her story reminds us that God positions us where we are for reasons beyond our understanding.
These narratives show us that "we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28, ESV). God's sovereignty means He weaves every joy and sorrow, every success and failure, into His divine plan.
Your story is unique and irreplaceable. No two journeys are the same, and that's by God's design. He has crafted your experiences to contribute something distinct to the Body of Christ. So when you feel that your story is too ordinary, remember that in God's eyes, it holds extraordinary potential.
2. The Power of Personal Testimony
What does it mean to share your testimony? It's more than recounting a dramatic conversion or a miraculous event. It's about revealing how God is at work in your daily life—the challenges you've faced, the lessons you've learned, and the grace you've received.
Revelation tells us, "And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony..." (Revelation 12:11, ESV). This scripture highlights the profound power our testimonies hold in overcoming the struggles we face. Your personal story is a testament to God's faithfulness and can be a beacon of hope to others.
There was another person in our church who shared how she found peace in the midst of a tumultuous work environment. Her colleagues noticed the calm she exuded despite stressful situations. When they asked her about it, she simply shared how her faith in Jesus gave her strength. That opened doors for deeper conversations about God, leading some of her coworkers to explore their own faith.
Your testimony doesn't have to move mountains to make a difference. Sometimes, it's the quiet assurance in your voice, the unwavering hope in your heart, or the simple acts of kindness that speak volumes about God's presence in your life.
3. Overcoming the Fear of Sharing Your Story
I understand that the idea of sharing your story can be daunting. Common fears include feeling unqualified, worrying that your story isn't impactful enough, or fearing judgment from others. Moses experienced similar doubts when God called him. He said, "Oh, my Lord, I am not eloquent... but I am slow of speech and of tongue." But God reassured him, "Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall speak" (Exodus 4:10-12, ESV).
God doesn't expect perfection; He seeks willingness. Here are some steps to help you overcome your fears:
Pray for Courage: Ask God to give you the strength to share your story.
Start Small: Share with a trusted friend or in a small group setting.
Focus on God's Work: Remember, it's about highlighting what God has done, not about showcasing yourself.
Trust in God's Guidance: Believe that He will give you the words and the right moment to share.
Remember, your vulnerability can be a powerful tool in God's hands. When you step out in faith, He steps in with power.
4. Living Your Testimony Daily: It’s More than Words
Actions often speak louder than words. The way we live our lives can be a continuous testimony to God's work in us. The Apostle Paul reminds us, "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control" (Galatians 5:22-23, ESV).
When we exhibit these qualities, we reflect God's character to those around us. Your patience with a difficult coworker, your kindness to a neighbor, or your integrity in challenging situations all serve as living testimonies.
Let's strive to be conscious of how our daily actions can draw others to Christ. Live with the awareness that people notice how you handle life's ups and downs. Your consistent faithfulness can inspire others to seek the source of your strength.
5. How to Share Your Story with Others
Sharing your story doesn't require you to be a polished speaker or a theological expert. Here's how you can begin:
Know Your Story: Reflect on your journey. Consider these three parts:
Before Knowing Christ: What was your life like?
Encountering Christ: How did you come to faith?
Life After Christ: How has your relationship with Him transformed you?
Consider Your Audience: Tailor your testimony to who you're speaking with—be it family, friends, or coworkers.
Be Authentic: Share honestly about your struggles and victories. Authenticity resonates more than perfection.
Invite Engagement: Encourage questions and be open to dialogue.
By sharing sincerely, you allow others to see the genuine impact of God in your life.
6. The Role of Community in Shaping Our Testimony
We are not meant to walk this journey alone. Proverbs tells us, "Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another" (Proverbs 27:17, ESV). Being part of a Christian community enriches our faith and shapes our stories.
Within most churches, there are numerous opportunities to share and grow together—be it in small groups, prayer meetings, or outreach programs. When we share our testimonies, we not only strengthen our own faith but also encourage others to recognize God's work in their lives.
Let's continue to support one another, sharing our experiences and learning together. Our collective stories can create a powerful tapestry of God's grace at work in our community.
7. Trusting God with the Outcome
When you share your story, remember that the results are in God's hands. The Apostle Paul wrote, "I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth" (1 Corinthians 3:6-7, ESV).
It's not our role to convert hearts—that's the work of the Holy Spirit. We are called to be faithful in sharing, trusting that God will use our words in His perfect timing. Let go of the need to see immediate results, and rest in the assurance that your obedience pleases God.
Your Story Matters More Than You Think
Every one of you holds a story that is significant in God's grand design. By recognizing the value of your journey, you open the door for God to use your experiences to touch others.
I encourage you this week to take a step of faith. Share your story with someone—perhaps a friend, a family member, or even a coworker. It doesn't have to be elaborate; just be genuine and let God's work in your life shine through.
Remember, God is glorified through your willingness to share, no matter how ordinary your story may seem to you. Your testimony has the potential to impact lives and further God's Kingdom in ways you might never anticipate.
I invite you to share your experiences—both the joys and the struggles. How has God been working in your life? What challenges have you faced in sharing your story, and how can we as a church support you?
Please feel free to reach out to me or share your thoughts with our community. Your story could be the encouragement someone else needs. Let's continue to grow together in faith, love, and unity.
