A few years ago, someone asked me a question that I’ve heard countless times in ministry.

“Pastor Chris, how do I know if God is speaking to me or if it’s just my own thoughts?”

Praying about a relationship.

Considering a new job.

Trying to figure out your next step.

You want God’s guidance, but you’re afraid of getting it wrong.

The good news is that God is not trying to play hide-and-seek with His children.

When people ask, “How do I know God is speaking to me?” they usually aren’t looking for information.

They’re looking for confidence.

They’re afraid of making a mistake.

They want certainty.

But one of the things I’ve learned is that following God is often less about finding absolute certainty and more about learning to trust His leadership one step at a time.

God rarely gives us the entire map.

More often, He gives us enough light for the next step.

Before we talk about impressions, feelings, or guidance, we need to start with the foundation.

The primary way God speaks today is through His Word.

Paul wrote:

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16, ESV)

If you want to hear God speak, start by opening your Bible.

I know that’s not the exciting answer some people are hoping for.

Many people want a dramatic sign or a supernatural experience.

Meanwhile, the Bible sits unopened on their shelf.

God will never tell you something that contradicts what He has already revealed in Scripture.

His voice will always align with His Word.

God Often Guides Through Wisdom

Sometimes we expect God to provide a specific answer when He has already given us wisdom.

Proverbs 3:5-6 says:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.”

Trusting God doesn’t mean turning off your brain.

It means surrendering your plans to Him while using the wisdom He provides.

Many decisions are not about discovering God’s hidden will.

They’re about applying God’s revealed wisdom.

“Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed.”

If you’re trying to discern God’s direction, don’t do it alone.

We become obsessed with the destination.

God becomes concerned with our transformation.

Many times, God is more interested in shaping our character than revealing every detail about our future.

Many sincere Christians live with a constant fear that they might miss God’s will.

They imagine God standing in heaven waiting for them to make the wrong choice.

But that’s not the picture Scripture gives us.

God is a Father.

Good fathers don’t set traps.

If your heart genuinely desires to follow Christ, God is far more committed to leading you than you are to finding the perfect answer.

That truth has brought me a lot of peace over the years.

Looking back, I can honestly say that God’s guidance usually became clearer in hindsight.

Rarely did I receive a complete blueprint.

More often, I took one faithful step.

Then another.

Then another.

Over time, I could see God’s fingerprints all over the journey.

Sometimes I wanted certainty.

God gave me trust.

Sometimes I wanted answers.

God gave me growth.

Sometimes I wanted a roadmap.

God gave me enough light for the next step.

And looking back, that was exactly what I needed.
