Still Wondering Why You’re Here? (Part 2)
How to Live Out Your Calling Every Day
Hi Friends! I’m Pastor Chris, and I write Faith Unplugged - A newsletter for those who want to live in a way that honors God. This is a two-part series where we’ll discuss your calling and how to uncover our God-given purpose. Subscribe so you won’t miss a thing. If this article helps you, consider a one-time gift.
Psst! - If you haven’t read Part 1 of this series, you can find it here.
Last time we saw that you don’t need permission to live out your calling. Now we’ll press deeper into how true purpose begins with knowing Christ before doing for Christ.
Purpose Starts With Relationship
We’ve already seen that your purpose isn’t a distant dream. It’s alive in the way you love, serve, and worship right now.
But here’s a deeper truth. Purpose doesn’t start with activity. It begins with relationship.
Your calling is first about who you know, not what you do.
“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33)
Billy Graham once said that life’s meaning is found in communion with Christ, not in chasing tasks. Before you run after clarity, run after Him.
Mary and Martha: Presence Over Productivity
Think about Mary and Martha in Luke 10:38–42.
Martha was busy serving, hosting, and getting everything just right. Mary, on the other hand, sat at Jesus’ feet, listening. Martha grew frustrated. She thought her tasks defined her worth.
But Jesus gently corrected her:
“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41–42)
Martha’s service wasn’t wrong. But Mary understood that relationship comes before responsibility. Purpose starts with presence.
We often confuse productivity with purpose. We hustle, hoping the activity will reveal our calling. But Christ reminds us that clarity begins with connection.
When you know Him, the rest will flow.
My Early Lesson in Leadership
I learned this lesson the hard way.
When I was younger, I sat in a church of over 2,000 people. Everywhere I looked, pastors and leaders were busy. They were setting up programs, managing schedules, and keeping everything moving. It looked impressive. It looked like leadership.
So when my turn came to lead, I thought I knew what mattered most. I could organize. I could prepare. I could make sure every detail was covered.
But I missed the heart.
What I didn’t realize was this. Leadership is not born out of skill or logistics. Authentic leadership is birthed out of a relationship with God. Without that, you can run the systems, but you will miss the Spirit.
Leadership on Holy Ground
Moses teaches us the same truth. He knew how to organize people. He had grown up in Pharaoh’s palace, trained in power and administration. But when God called him to lead Israel, it was not his resume that qualified him. It was his willingness to stand barefoot before the burning bush. It was his dependence on God at the Red Sea when there was no way forward. It was his hunger to meet with God face to face on the mountain.
Moses reminds us that leadership begins on holy ground, not in the boardroom. It flows from knowing the one who calls you, not from checking boxes or managing tasks.
We often confuse productivity with purpose. We hustle, hoping the activity will reveal our calling. But Christ reminds us that clarity begins with connection.
When you know Him, the rest will flow.
Four Steps to Clarify Your Purpose
Step 1: Seek the Lord
Ask Him to search your heart and speak.
“Search me, O God, and know my heart!” (Psalm 139:23)
👉🏻 What is God whispering to your heart today?
Step 2: Align Your Desires with His
As you delight in Him, His desires shape yours.
“Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalm 37:4)
👉🏻 Which desires align with God, and which distract?
Step 3: Use Discernment
Filter decisions through scripture and godly counsel.
👉🏻 Where are you tempted to follow culture over Christ?
Step 4: Grow in Community
Purpose gets clearer when confirmed with trusted believers.
👉🏻 Who can speak gospel truth into your life right now?
Remember
Your purpose is not hidden in a puzzle waiting to be solved. It is found in a person who already knows your name. Jesus Himself is your calling, your clarity, and your future. When you walk with Him, every step (big or small) becomes sacred.
You were created to glorify God, to reflect His love, and to shine His presence into the world around you. That is not someday. That is today.
Let’s Pray Together
Heavenly Father, draw me closer than my striving ever could. Teach me to treasure Your presence above my performance. Make me bold like Moses, steady like Mary, and faithful in the little things You place before me. May my life reveal that true clarity comes only from knowing You. Amen.

Substack is growing fast, which in turn leads to an increase in spam and people looking to take advantage of others. To protect our community, the chat area (not the comments section) will soon be members-only.
If you want to stay part of the conversation where we pray together, share encouragement, and discuss what God is doing, you’ll need to upgrade.
Don’t miss out on being part of a space that’s safe, faith-filled, and growing stronger every week. Your support doesn’t just give you access. It helps build a community where Christ is at the center.

Thank you
I love that you said "authentic leadership is birthed out of a relationship with God." We fail every time we attempt to lead on our own.
