As always, a well thought through, practical guide to hearing God. I think the first one is the hardest to do because I wonder how many people think that God will speak to them.
With the clamour that life throws at us on a daily basis, it behooves us to be conscientious, not only in establishing the time, but the space necessary for expanding our capacity for hearing God’s voice. In these current times, that seems to be where the proverbial rubber meets the road.
Thank you for being a beacon in these seemingly uncertain times, and thank you for being a mile marker for others traveling on their own road towards discovering God‘s voice for themselves.
Thank you for this encouraging piece, Pastor Chris. I have a lot going on that I need God to speak into. We begin with the expectation that He will and does speak to us. So, I lean into Him for the answers.
This was so encouraging to read. The five steps you outlined are both practical and biblical. I love how you tied Samuel’s story to the reminder that even the most faithful sometimes get it wrong at first. As I grow, I just want to keep hearing Him and following. Thanks so much for sharing!
I haven’t followed you long, so I don’t know your full testimony yet, but it sounds like quite the journey (and exactly the kind of job God is up for!). Have you ever read Imagine Heaven? I love how it describes so many people’s near-death experiences and encounters with God—so faith-affirming.
My own story was on the more extreme side: I went from being a drug addict who had never even heard about Jesus, to hearing His voice in a dream, to a complete turnaround—now 16 years of following Him. His voice has always felt very personal to me, since He’s the only Father who’s ever truly protected me.
I’m grateful for spaces like this where we can share our stories, point one another back to Him, and hopefully help His voice feel just a little clearer.

I’ve read Hearing God by Dallas Willard. Do you have any other good books, podcasts, sermons etc that you would recommend or found really helpful in this area?
