Why Do I Still Struggle With the Same Sin?
Understanding why the Christian life often feels like two steps forward and one step back.
I’ll never forget a conversation I had after a Sunday service. A man waited until almost everyone had left. He looked around to make sure no one else could hear us before quietly asking, “Pastor Chris... can I ask you something?”
“Of course.”
He lowered his voice even more.
“I keep asking God to forgive me for the same sin. I honestly hate it. I’ve prayed. I’ve cried. I’ve promised God I’d never do it again.”
Then he looked at the floor.
“Am I even saved?”
I’ve heard versions of that question more times than I can count over the last twenty years in ministry.
Maybe your struggle looks different than his.
Maybe it’s anger that keeps showing up.
Lust
Pride
Gossip
Fear
Drunkenness
Jealousy
An addiction you thought was finally behind you.
You confess it. You repent. You experience victory for a while. Then one day you find yourself right back where you started.
Eventually you begin wondering if something is fundamentally wrong with you.
If you’ve ever felt that way, you’re not alone.
And you’re certainly not the first follower of Jesus to ask the question.
The Question Beneath the Question
When people ask, “Why do I still struggle with the same sin?” they’re usually asking something much deeper.
They’re asking,
“If Jesus really changed me... why don’t I feel more changed?”
That’s an honest question.
It’s also one the Bible answers.
Even Paul Had a Battle
One of the most comforting passages in Scripture comes from the Apostle Paul.
Yes, that Paul.
The missionary.
The church planter.
The man who wrote much of the New Testament.
In Romans 7:19 he writes,
“For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.” (ESV)
Have you ever read that and thought, Wait... Paul struggled too?
Apparently so.
Paul wasn’t celebrating his sin.
He wasn’t excusing it.
He hated it.
There was a battle happening inside him.
The same battle every believer experiences.
Our old sinful nature has been defeated through Christ, but until Jesus returns, we’re still living in fallen bodies in a fallen world.
Salvation happens in a moment.
Sanctification happens over a lifetime.
The Difference Between Conviction and Condemnation
This is where many Christians get stuck.
They confuse conviction with condemnation.
Those are not the same thing.
Condemnation says,
“You’re hopeless.”
“You’re a failure.”
“God is tired of you.”
“You’ll never change.”
That voice never leads you toward Jesus.
It pushes you away from Him.
Romans 8:1 reminds us,
“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” (ESV)
Conviction sounds different.
The Holy Spirit lovingly says,
“This isn’t who I’ve called you to be.”
“Come back.”
“Let’s deal with this together.”
Conviction produces repentance.
Condemnation produces shame.
One moves you toward the Father.
The other convinces you to hide.
Ever since Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, shame has been telling people to run from God.
Grace keeps inviting us back.
Repentance Is More Than Saying Sorry
I think many of us accidentally reduce repentance to apologizing.
We sin.
We feel guilty.
We ask God to forgive us.
Then we wait until the next time.
Biblical repentance goes much deeper.
The word literally means to change your mind, resulting in a change of direction.
It’s turning around.
It’s asking questions like,
“What keeps leading me here?”
“What temptation am I refusing to deal with?”
“What lie am I believing?”
“What practical boundaries do I need?”
Real repentance isn’t just about regretting sin.
It’s about learning to wage war against it.
Jesus didn’t simply die to forgive our sins.
He died to free us from being enslaved to them.
Growth Is Usually Slower Than We Want
One of the hardest parts of following Jesus is accepting that spiritual growth rarely happens overnight.
We love instant results.
God often chooses gradual transformation.
Think about how Jesus described spiritual growth.
Seeds.
Vines.
Fruit.
None of those happen overnight.
Fruit grows quietly.
Almost invisibly.
Yet over time the evidence becomes undeniable.
Sometimes you’re growing more than you realize.
The sins that once controlled your life may now simply tempt you.
The time between falling may be getting longer.
Your repentance may be happening faster.
Your desire for holiness may be stronger than it used to be.
Those are signs that God is still at work.
Don’t Fight Sin Alone
One of Satan’s favorite lies is convincing us that our struggle is unique.
“If anyone knew...”
“They’d never understand.”
“I’ll deal with this myself.”
Scripture paints a different picture.
James 5:16 says,
“Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.” (ESV)
Notice it doesn’t say forgiveness comes from another person.
Forgiveness comes from Christ.
But healing often happens in community.
Sin grows best in secrecy.
It begins losing its grip when it’s brought into the light.
That doesn’t mean telling everyone.
It means finding mature believers you trust enough to be honest with.
What Has Helped Me Most
After more than twenty years in ministry, I’ve noticed something.
The Christians who continue growing aren’t the ones who never stumble.
They’re the ones who keep getting back up.
Proverbs 24:16 says,
“For the righteous falls seven times and rises again...” (ESV)
Notice what makes the righteous different.
Not that they never fall.
That they keep getting up.
I’ve had seasons where I thought I should have been farther along spiritually than I was.
I’ve become frustrated with how slowly God seemed to be changing certain parts of my heart.
Looking back, I can see that God wasn’t just interested in changing my behavior.
He was transforming my heart.
That’s slower work.
But it’s deeper work.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I keep committing the same sin?
Because spiritual growth is a lifelong process. Christians are forgiven immediately, but God continues transforming us throughout our lives. Repeated temptation doesn’t mean God has abandoned you.
Does struggling with sin mean I’m not saved?
Not necessarily. In fact, the grief you feel over your sin is often evidence that the Holy Spirit is working in your life. Unbelievers typically aren’t concerned about honoring God. Believers are.
What’s the difference between conviction and condemnation?
Conviction comes from the Holy Spirit and leads you back to Jesus through repentance. Condemnation fills you with shame and tells you to hide from God. Romans 8:1 reminds believers there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ.
Will I ever stop struggling with sin?
Some sins lose their grip dramatically. Others become lifelong battles. While we won’t experience complete freedom from sin until we’re with Christ, God promises to keep transforming us day by day.
How can I overcome recurring sin?
Stay close to Jesus through prayer and Scripture. Confess your sin quickly. Identify patterns that lead to temptation. Invite trusted believers to hold you accountable. Depend on God’s grace instead of your own willpower.
Is God tired of forgiving me?
No. If you’ve genuinely placed your faith in Christ, God’s forgiveness isn’t based on your perfect performance. His mercy is rooted in the finished work of Jesus on the cross.
The Next Step
If you’re exhausted from fighting the same battle, don’t let shame have the final word.
Run to Jesus again. Not because you’ve earned another chance.
Because that’s exactly what the cross was for.
God isn’t asking you to pretend you’ve never failed. He’s inviting you to trust that His grace is greater than your greatest struggle.

This is excellent Chris. In my experience, many years ago, I did a prayer experiment: I decided that I would pray to have a six pack (not beer, but a nice set of abs). I worked pretty hard at it, and prayed frequently for this goal. It never happened. I never got my six pack, but what I received was that God changed my desire.
It's a silly example, but in a sense, the same thing is true with recurrent sin. We are trying to overcome sin through our own efforts. Will power alone is not sufficient to overcome sin. It requires continual prayer, the power of the Holy Spirit to change our desires, accountability with other believers, transparency, and most of all, patience. In time, the Holy Spirit changes our hearts such that those desires fade. This does not mean that we will never stumble, but the repair process comes in acknowledging this sin, asking for forgiveness, asking for the power of the Holy Spirit to protect us from the deceit of the enemy, and to change our heart and desires to align with those of God. "Trust in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart" - given submission and trust, God changes our desires to align with his. This is the real story of salvation, not merely "getting saved to get to heaven", but being transformed into the image of Christ.
