If you’ve prayed the same prayer a hundred times, this article is for you.
Maybe you’ve begged God to heal someone you love.
Maybe you’ve asked Him to save your marriage.
Maybe you’ve pleaded for a job, a child, freedom from anxiety, or just one clear answer.
And the silence has made you wonder something you never wanted to ask.
“God... are You even listening?”
If you’ve ever asked that question, you’re not alone.
Even some of the greatest people in scripture did too.
My Experience with Answered Prayer
For years, I prayed one simple prayer.
“God, what do You want me to do with my life?”
I knew the desire He had placed in my heart. I wanted to be a pastor. I wanted to help people know Jesus and grow in their faith. But every door I knocked on stayed closed. Opportunities came and went. There were seasons when I wondered if I had heard God wrong or if He had simply forgotten about me.
Then, after years of praying, God opened a door I never could have opened myself.
Looking back, I can see that He wasn’t ignoring my prayers. He was preparing me for them. There were lessons I needed to learn, experiences I needed to have, and ways He wanted to shape my character before I stepped into the calling I had been praying for.
At the time, the waiting felt like silence.
Now I can see it was preparation.
The Honest Answer
Sometimes God answers immediately.
Sometimes He answers differently.
Sometimes He says no.
Sometimes He says wait.
And sometimes...
It feels like He says nothing at all.
That silence can be one of the hardest parts of following Jesus.
1. God Isn’t Ignoring You
One of the biggest lies we believe is this:
“If God loved me, He would answer right now.”
But Scripture tells a different story.
Think about Martha and Mary.
Their brother Lazarus was dying.
They sent word to Jesus because they knew He could heal him.
Jesus loved them deeply.
And then...
He waited.
Not because He didn’t care.
Because He had something bigger planned.
Sometimes God’s delay isn’t His absence.
It’s His preparation.
Read: John 11
2. Sometimes God Is Changing You Before He Changes Your Situation
We usually pray for God to change our circumstances.
God is often more interested in changing us.
Paul prayed three times for God to remove his “thorn in the flesh.”
God didn’t remove it.
Instead He said:
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
Sometimes unanswered prayer becomes the classroom where we learn dependence.
Not because God enjoys watching us struggle.
Because He knows who we’re becoming.
Read: 2 Corinthians 12:7-10
3. Sometimes the Answer Is “Not Yet”
Waiting isn’t punishment.
Waiting is often preparation.
Think about Joseph.
David.
Abraham.
Hannah.
Almost every major biblical story contains long seasons where it looked like God wasn’t doing anything.
But behind the scenes...
Everything was moving exactly where it needed to go.
God rarely wastes waiting.
4. Sometimes We’re Asking for the Wrong Thing
This one is hard.
Not because God is annoyed with our prayers.
But because we can’t always see what He sees.
Children ask for things loving parents refuse.
Not because they’re cruel.
Because they know what comes next.
God has that same perspective.
His “no” is often protecting us from something we can’t yet understand.
5. Prayer Was Never Just About Getting Answers
This might be the biggest surprise.
Prayer isn’t primarily about changing God’s mind.
It’s about being with Him.
Jesus often withdrew to lonely places to pray.
Not because He needed more information.
Because relationship always comes before requests.
If every prayer were answered instantly...
Would we still seek God Himself?
Or only His gifts?
So... Why Doesn’t God Answer My Prayers?
Sometimes He already has.
Just not the way we expected.
Sometimes He’s waiting.
Sometimes He’s protecting.
Sometimes He’s preparing.
Sometimes He’s inviting us closer.
But here’s what I know.
Silence is not abandonment.
Waiting is not rejection.
Delay is not proof that God has stopped loving you.
When You Don’t Know What to Pray
Keep praying.
Keep showing up.
Keep trusting.
Even Jesus prayed in the garden:
“My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me... nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” (Matthew 26:39, ESV)
The greatest prayer in history wasn’t answered the way Jesus’ humanity desired.
And because of that...
Our salvation became possible.
Sometimes the prayers that seem unanswered become part of a much bigger story.
If you’re carrying a prayer that feels forgotten...
Don’t assume God has forgotten you.
The God who hears every sparrow fall also hears every whispered prayer.
Even the ones that end with tears instead of “Amen.”
Keep talking to Him.
He’s still listening.

Thank you for sharing this, Chris. I really needed this reminder today.
I've had seasons where I've prayed the same prayers over and over, wondering if God was listening or if I was simply waiting for something that would never come. Looking back, I can see there were times He was doing a deeper work in me before changing my circumstances, even though I couldn't see it then.
I especially appreciated your point that silence isn't abandonment. That's something many of us need to hear because waiting can easily be mistaken for God's absence. Thank you for taking the time to write this and encourage those of us who are still in the waiting. It was a blessing to read.
